Perchè proprio Daniel?

: Why Daniel?

I was wondering why Morpheus is the one who names Daniel in SOM, as Daniel does not keep that name when he becomes Dream. ("Daniel?" "No, I'm afraid not."). Does Daniel have some approipriate meaning to it, or what. One wuld assume that Morpheus didn't call him Daniel just because he liked the name. Anyone?

Well, I think it was more along the lines of Lyta calling her baby Daniel, he was more then that by then, and had to let her know.

Oh, obviously I wasn't making myself very clear. What I was trying to say was, why did Morpheus name Daniel (SOM: "By the way, his name is Daniel")? What is the signifigance of the name if Daniel wasn't going to keep it later on? Oh dear, I think I'm still not being very clear, am I?

Hmm...my feeling was just that people had to have something to call him, right?
And not "Morpheus".

Oh, wait, SOM...*now* I know what you're talking about. Forget what I just said.

My guess is that Morpheus just knew what Daniel's proper name was...he wasn't picking a name he liked, he was stating a fact...the kids capital-N Name was Daniel. Some kinda knowledge you get when you're an Endless. I mean, Lyta took right to it, even though she should by rights name him anything *but* Daniel, if it came from that spooky bastard. :-)

Well, when he was named, he was a baby and not yet in his new role in life,.......
I think the naming was a reminder to Lyta that he wasn't going to be her's forever.

I don't suppose it could be a Biblical reference, by any chance?

I was thinking something around those lines, although I'm not sure that any biblical Daniel's are really aprropriate. Does anyone know what Daniel means?

One books says that it means "God will judge me" Daniel was a prophet, and could interpret dreams...let me see...I'm skimming the Book of Daniel right now...He was a captive, and it is said that "God gave him understanding of all visions and dreams..." Nebuchadnezzar, king of Judah has terrible deams, and Daniel interprets them, thereby winning great favor, (Though I can't see if It won his freedom...I'm *just* skimming) Now, Judah was captured by Darius, and he decreed that no one should pray, but Daniel refused to stop, and got caught. That's why he ended up in the lions den...but, because he was faithful, the lions didn't eat him. The end of the book is some visions that Daniel had of his own, many of the end of the world.
That's the barebones from the King James bible. I hope i haven't offended any one by my simplistic telling, but these are the things that i thought might be compared and contrated to Daniel from the Dreaming.
I wonder if there is any more in the Torah?

you'll probably get another message from me on this, but in my cheap book of Phrase and Fable, it says a Daniel is someone "wise beyond his years"

Because Daniel starts w/ the letter D. You know how those crazy Endless are about their D's.

Quite so. God knows the Endless Daniel is right up there with Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. :) Seriously though, I never even thought of why Morpheus named him until now. Maybe he just liked the name...
